CASE STUDY 3: DANA, POE, AND SEACOLE x MAPBOX STUDIO (interactive)
Overview
Case Study 3 constellates the works of Edgar Allan Poe, Richard Henry Dana, Jr., and Mary Seacole onto a single interactive map by creating custom datasets and a multilayer tileset using Mapbox Studio and Mapbox GL JS.
Problem
Things weren’t coding.
There were numerous occasions when place names simply would not code because they a) no longer existed, geopolitically—like Russian America in Dana—, or b) no longer existed, geophysically, such as Dead Man’s Island off the coast of California. Their coordinates could not be found.
There were also few readily availably datasets for these former geopolitical and geophysical entities.
Process
So, in the case of Russian America AKA Asitka AKA Baranoff Island, I traced the island using MapTiler and downloaded the GeoJSON file to then merge with the existing shapefile for the Dana islands layer so it could be uploaded to Mapbox Studio as a single tileset source.
